What We Do in Ravenna

Ravenna has been the seat of Portage County since 1808, and 11,323 people lived in the city at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1799 from part of Ravenna Township and named for the city of Ravenna in Italy. At the 2020 count it had 5,597 housing units and 5,138 households, with a median age of 41.3.

A county seat with two centuries of history has garages of every kind, from detached ones behind older houses to attached doors on postwar streets. Every one of them is familiar ground for us. Snapped spring, unwound cable, dead opener: phone whenever it happens for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour.

Garage Door Repairs in Ravenna

  • Extension springs on older detached garages, replaced with safety cables added. Spring repair.
  • Old wood doors that sag or drag. A section can sometimes be rebuilt; otherwise we quote a steel replacement.
  • Cables and drums worn by salt. Cable repair.
  • Doors that jumped the track. Off-track repair.
  • Openers old and new, including Craftsman units we still repair. Opener repair.

Benjamin and Nancy Tappan's Town

Benjamin Tappan arrived on June 11, 1799, to claim land his father had bought in the Western Reserve, built a few log cabins and went back to Connecticut in the summer of 1800. Later that year he returned newly married, and it was his wife, Nancy Wright, who suggested naming the settlement after Ravenna, Italy. When plans for Portage County were announced in 1806, she lobbied for Ravenna as the county seat, and it was chosen in 1808. She also persuaded other Connecticut families to move here, though the Tappans themselves left in 1809.

The first mail route came in 1802, the first school in 1803, and the first courthouse in 1810. A brick courthouse followed in 1830, and the current one in 1961. Rail service arrived in 1851, telephones in 1882, and in 1898 East and West Main streets became the first to be paved. By 1909 nearly 50 passenger trains stopped in town every day.

The census followed: 306 people in 1830, 4,003 in 1900, 9,857 in 1950 and 11,780 in 1970. A city that grew that steadily has house after house built before anyone owned an automatic opener. Many of their garages still carry extension springs or an old wood door, and we can repair those or replace them with a modern steel door sized to the opening.

Downtown Snow and Salt

Ravenna's winters bring snowfall, road salt and long stretches below freezing. Salt spray and slush are especially hard on detached garages that sit close to an alley or a busy street, where the bottom panel takes the splash all season.

Keep the bottom seal whole and the track clean, and don't run an opener against a door frozen to the ground. A fall tune-up from us includes lubrication, balance, cable checks and an opener safety test.

Hearses, Toys and a Lincoln Stop

Ravenna has an unusual industrial past. A carriage works founded in 1831 built high-end hearses so well regarded that two Ohio presidents, William McKinley and Warren G. Harding, were carried in them. A glassworks, set up in 1848, is recognized as the town's first true industry. A toy company incorporated here in 1905 was, through the 1920s, the largest cast-iron toy manufacturer in the world.

On May 25, 1853, the Ohio Woman's Rights Association held its first statewide meeting in Ravenna. On February 15, 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln's train passed through on the way to his inauguration; he had not meant to speak, but the crowd and a cannon salute brought him out to address them, and a small plaque has marked the spot since 1985. In the late 1990s the downtown got a facelift to restore its historic architecture, and since the 1970s the city has held the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair every September.

The Ravenna School District runs Ravenna High School, Brown Middle School and three elementary buildings, and the Maplewood Career Center serves high school students from ten schools in Portage and Summit counties. State Routes 59, 44, 14 and 88 pass through the city, which sits between Interstate 80 to the north and Interstate 76 to the south. Notable Ravenna natives and residents range from Marvin Kent, namesake of the city of Kent, to singer Maynard James Keenan and Devo co-founder Gerald Casale.
