Solon's Industrial Parks

Solon has an employment base big enough to support its residential population. Wet Ground, Cheese Factories, Then Subdivisions

The first settlers came from Connecticut in 1820. The township took its name from Lorenzo Solon Bull, son of early settler Isaac Bull. Drainage and wetlands made farming hard at first, but Solon Township became farm country anyway, growing corn and wheat and supporting five cheese factories. Solon Township once took in today's city and the villages of Bentleyville and Glenwillow.

Solon was laid out on a traditional New England plan with a public square, and SOM Center Road, now Ohio 91, was named for the town centers it linked: Solon, Orange and Mayfield. It was one of the first cities to use a comprehensive zoning plan, which kept industry apart from its bedroom neighborhoods. Growth took off after the war: 2,570 people in 1950, 6,333 in 1960, 11,519 in 1970 and 18,548 by 1990.

It gets relatively high precipitation, an average of 42.78 inches a year, thanks to lake effect and its spot at the western end of the North American snowbelt. The record low was -25 °F in 1994, and the record high was 101 °F back in 1918.
