What We Do in Portage County
Portage County is part of the Akron metropolitan area, itself part of the larger Cleveland, Akron and Canton region, with Ravenna as its county seat and Kent as its largest city. The 2020 census counted 161,791 residents. Besides Kent and Ravenna, the county has the cities of Aurora and Streetsboro, five villages, 18 townships and parts of Tallmadge and Mogadore, which are mostly in Summit County.
Whether it's a college rental in Kent, a newer home in Aurora or a farmhouse in the eastern townships, we can fix it: springs, cables, rollers, track and openers, plus new doors when the old one is done. 24/7, a real human answers. No AI. Technicians nearby, often at your door within 1 hour. We call you when we're on the way.

Picking Out a New Door
We measure the opening, check the framing and help you pick a door that fits the house and the budget, from basic steel to carriage-house styles by Clopay. Openers from LiftMaster and Genie are available too. See new door installation.
From Portage Path to Six First Townships
The county takes its name from the Portage Path, an old Native American trail between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers where travelers carried their canoes; the trail itself is in present-day Summit County. Towner's Mound, a burial mound in Franklin Township, is older than any of the cultures later recorded here.
The first European settler was Abraham Honey, who came to what is now Mantua Township in 1798. Asa Hall followed in Atwater Township in April 1799, and that June Benjamin Tappan Jr. founded Ravenna, David Daniels came to Palmyra Township and Ebenezer Sheldon settled in Aurora. In 1802 the whole area was organized as Franklin Township. The legislature created Portage County from Trumbull County with an act passed February 10, 1807, which took effect June 7, 1807, and the county stayed attached to Trumbull until June 8, 1808. A family group of Huguenot refugees had also made its way to Portage County by 1804.
The early county was huge, covering most of present-day Summit County, all of Medina and Huron counties and parts of Lorain and Ashland. It started with six organized townships, Franklin, Deerfield, Aurora, Hiram, Springfield and Hudson, and reached a maximum of 30 before new counties took their share. The present boundaries date from 1840, when Summit County took ten of its townships.

Reservoirs, Rivers and Campus Towns
West Branch State Park, east of Ravenna on the west branch of the Mahoning River, covers more than 5,000 acres of land and 2,650 acres of water, mostly in Charlestown, Edinburg and Paris townships. The federal Army Corps of Engineers finished the Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir in 1965, then leased the land to the state, and the park opened in 1966. The reservoir was built for recreation, water supply and fish and wildlife management, among other uses. Early settlers and Native Americans once used the Mahoning River as a source of salt.
Water covers 3.3% of the county, and between the reservoirs, the Cuyahoga valley and the wooded townships, a lot of garages sit in damp air. That shows up as rust on springs and cable drums and swollen wood trim around the opening. A tune-up in the fall catches worn parts before the first freeze.
Highways, Schools and the Largest Towns
Highways
Interstate 76, the Ohio Turnpike (I-80) and Interstate 480 cross the county, along with U.S. Routes 224 and 422 and state routes including 5, 14, 43, 44, 59, 82, 88 and 303. The Portage County Regional Airport is in Shalersville Township, north of Ravenna.
Transit
PARTA, formed in 1975 by the city of Kent and Franklin Township, is based in Franklin Township just outside Kent, and its routes now cover much of the county. It runs local routes in Kent and an interurban route linking Ravenna, Kent and Stow, plus express service to downtown Cleveland and Akron.
Colleges
Kent State University, a public research university with about 40,000 students, is the county's largest employer, and it runs seven regional campuses around Northeast Ohio. Hiram College is a small liberal arts college in Hiram, and Northeast Ohio Medical University is in Rootstown.
The Largest Towns
Kent had 28,215 residents in 2020, Streetsboro 17,260, Aurora 17,239, Brimfield Township 11,352 and Ravenna 11,323, followed by Rootstown Township.

Installed new door & opener. Great service from initial service appt to installation.
Excellent service and highly recommended! I called them initially for routine garage door maintenance, but during the inspection, they identified that the spring was broken. I had been experiencing issues in the past with the garage door not opening or closing properly, and they were able to identify the underlying problem quickly. They recommended replacing the spring with higher-quality rods and drums, and I’m very happy with the result. I could immediately feel the difference after the repair—the garage door feels much stronger, smoother, and more secure than before. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain what needed to be done and why. I really appreciate their honest recommendation and quality of work. Great experience from start to finish. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing garage door repair or maintenance!
