What We Do in North Ridgeville

Along the eastern edge of Lorain County, where it meets Westlake, North Olmsted and Olmsted Township, North Ridgeville has become the county's third-largest city. The 2020 census counted 35,280 residents in 14,148 households, and the city's 14,716 housing units were just 3.9% vacant. Homeowners stay put: the homeowner vacancy rate was only 1.1%.

In a city that has grown this fast, garage doors range from decades-old originals to ones installed last year, and we fix all of them. Ring us about a broken torsion spring, a cable that unwound, a door stuck halfway or an opener that ignores the remote for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour. New doors and openers are part of the job too.

Garage door springs replaced and adjusted by Proactive Garage Door Repair in North Ridgeville, Ohio

Ridgeville Breakdowns We See Most

  • Broken torsion springs on heavy double doors. We install springs sized to the door's actual weight; see torsion spring repair.
  • Openers from the housing boom that have started to grind or reverse. Our opener repair page covers LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and Craftsman units.
  • Photo-eyes nudged sideways by a recycling cart or a scooter, so the door refuses to close. We realign or replace them; see sensor service.
  • Doors off their tracks after a car nudges the bottom panel. See off-track repair.

Upgrading a Subdivision Door

When the whole street has the same plain door, a new one is the fastest way to set your house apart. A carriage-house design with decorative hardware, a long-panel door with a window row, or a dark finish on a light-colored house all change the look. Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton all offer those looks, and insulated models make sense when a bonus room sits above the garage or you use it as a workshop. Styles and colors are on the installation page.

If storms knock out your power, a LiftMaster belt-drive unit with its own battery pack still lets the car out, and the app tells you at the office whether anyone left the garage open. Options are listed under new openers.

A Farm Town That Tripled After 1960

Settlers arrived in 1810, and the village took its name from a ridge near the original town site. Two buildings from those early days are on the National Register of Historic Places: the former North Ridgeville Town Hall and the Samuel C. Cahoon House, built in 1850.

Sweet corn growing is still honored at the city's Corn Festival. The census shows how fast the city grew: 8,057 people in 1960, 21,237 by 1980, 22,338 in 2000 and 35,280 in 2020. If your house went up during that boom, its door, springs and opener may all be original, and builder-grade parts from those years are now reaching the age when springs break and opener gears wear out.

Double Doors Against a West Wind

Where open ground still lies between neighborhoods, winter wind crosses it with little to slow it down. A wide double door takes that wind like a sail. The strain shows up as loose hinges, cracked end stiles and rollers worn flat on one side, and in deep cold a spring that has been tired for a while finally snaps.

An October tune-up catches most of that. We tighten the hardware, lubricate springs, hinges and rollers, check the door's balance and swap out a cracked weather seal so the garage stays drier through January and February.

Corn Festival, Rangers Stadium and Sandy Ridge

The North Ridgeville Corn Festival grew out of the city's 1976 bicentennial plans. The first one ran six hours with 13 booths around the middle school track, and the second honored Harold Sweet, a local sweet corn grower. The committee took the Corn Festival name in 1977. City parks include Sandy Ridge Reservation, South Central Park with its splash pad, Frontier Park, Palmer Field, Victory Park and Root Road Park.

North Ridgeville City Schools run the Early Childhood Learning Community on Mills Creek Lane, Liberty Elementary on Jaycox Road and the North Ridgeville Academic Center on Bainbridge Road for grades 3 to 8, plus the Ranger High Tech Academy for STEM students. North Ridgeville High School stands next door on Bainbridge Road, where the new Rangers Stadium hosted its first football game on September 2, 2016. Lorain County Community College runs its University Partnership Ridge Campus in the east end beside Interstate 480, and the city has a branch of the Lorain Public Library.

The Ohio Turnpike, Interstate 480, US 20 and State Routes 10, 83 and 113 all cross the city.

North Ridgeville Questions

Spring life is measured in trips up and down. A household that runs the door eight or ten times a day reaches the end of a standard spring surprisingly fast. On the replacement we can use heavier-wire springs rated for many more trips.

In many cases, yes. We first lift the door by hand to confirm it balances, because pairing a new motor with a door that is out of balance shortens the motor’s life.

Yes. Every part of North Ridgeville is covered, along with the Cuyahoga County towns just east of it and the rest of Lorain County.
