What We Do in Medina

Medina is the county seat of Medina County, and its history is on display right on the Square. The 2020 census counted 26,094 people here in 10,659 households. The city takes in parts of four townships: Lafayette, Medina, Montville and York.

We repair springs, cables, rollers, off-track doors and openers all over Medina, and we install new doors and openers too. The town has been growing since 1818, so the right fix often depends on which street you live on.

Repairs Around the Square and Beyond

  • Older and detached garages. Near the center of town, doors may still run on extension springs along the tracks, hung from wood framing that has aged. We replace springs in pairs, add safety cables and check the wood where the track mounts. See spring repair.
  • Wide doors on newer homes. A 16-foot door wears out torsion springs, cables and rollers faster than a single door. See rollers, hinges and tracks.
  • Openers, remotes and keypads. We repair all major opener brands and reprogram remotes, keypads and built-in car buttons. See opener repair.
  • A door hanging crooked or out of its track. Leave it closed and call. See off-track repair.

New Doors That Suit Medina Streets

Close to the historic district, a carriage-house style door can match an older home while opening like a modern one. In newer neighborhoods, many owners pick an insulated door with a row of windows across the top. We carry Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton lines and bring samples to the free estimate. See new garage doors.

For openers, we install LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie. A wall-mount model helps in a garage with little headroom, and every new opener comes with a free keypad. See new openers.

Industrial Doors on the West Side

Medina has a working side too. The Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad keeps sidings and spurs that serve many industries, mostly on the city's west side. For loading doors, shop doors and other overhead doors at a business, see commercial door repair.

From Village Square to Suburban City

Medina was founded on November 30, 1818, as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Its first name was Mecca, but another Ohio community already used it, so the name was changed. Most early residents farmed, and in the 1830s the Ohio and Erie Canal helped them get crops to market. Medina was incorporated as a village and county seat on January 31, 1835.

Much of Medina Square, including the Town Hall and Engine House, was rebuilt in the 1870s. The work took almost ten years, which is why the buildings share one Victorian style. Today the Square is a historic district covering nine blocks around Uptown Park, and a Historic Preservation Board helps keep its look and feel.

The city stayed small for a long time. It had 5,093 people in 1950 and was chartered as a city on May 6, 1952. Then it took off: 8,235 people in 1960, 15,307 in 1980 and 25,139 in 2000. So most Medina garages were built after 1960. If you live close to the historic center, your garage may be older, narrower or detached. In a newer subdivision, you're more likely to have an attached two- or three-car garage with a wide, heavy door.

Medina Winters and Your Garage

Medina is an inland city, south of Cleveland and west of Akron, but it still gets real Northeast Ohio winters. Cold snaps, heavy snow and lots of road salt all end up at your garage door.

Salt drips off the car and settles along the door's bottom edge, where the cables meet the brackets, and that's where rust starts. Cold finds weak springs: one near the end of its life often breaks on a frigid morning, and the door suddenly feels far too heavy to lift. Don't fight it or keep pressing the button. Call us. We answer emergency calls 24/7, and we'll get it moving again.

Getting Around Medina

U.S. 42 runs through the city, along with State Routes 3, 18 and 57. The Medina Transit Authority runs buses around town and the county, and many of the old rail rights of way are now hiking and biking trails. Mail uses ZIP codes 44256 and 44258.

Past the city line, we cover Lafayette Township, Medina Township, Montville Township and York Township, plus Brunswick, Chippewa Lake, Sharon Township and Granger Township.

Medina Landmarks We Know

Schools are easy landmarks here. Medina High School, A.I. Root Middle School and Claggett Middle School anchor the Medina City School District. Its elementary schools include Eliza Northrop and Ralph E. Waite, both opened for the 2009-10 school year, plus Ella Canavan, H.G. Blake and Sidney Fenn. The Medina County Career Center and the Main Library of the Medina County District Library are in town as well.

A.I. Root Middle School carries a famous local name. Amos Root founded the A.I. Root Company in Medina in 1869 to make beehives and beekeeping equipment, and the town became a center for beehive manufacturing.
