What We Do in Youngstown

Youngstown is the county seat of Mahoning County, with a small portion of the city reaching into Trumbull County, and it follows the Mahoning River through Northeast Ohio. Its 60,068 residents at the 2020 census made it the eleventh-most populous city in Ohio. The census counted 24,852 households in 28,675 housing units, and only 1.8% of owner homes stood empty.

That adds up to a lot of garage doors on a lot of different kinds of houses, from brick streets near downtown to postwar blocks on the West Side. When a spring snaps or an opener dies, call us for same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour at your Youngstown address and the parts on the truck.

Youngstown Garage Door Repairs

  • Broken torsion and extension springs, the most common call from older garages on the South and North sides. Spring replacement.
  • Frayed or snapped lift cables that leave a door hanging crooked. Cable repair.
  • Doors off their tracks after a bump from a car bumper or a trash can. Off-track repair.
  • Openers with stripped gears, dead remotes or worn logic boards, older Craftsman units included (repair only). Opener repair.
  • Photo-eye sensors nudged crooked by a rake or a bike. Sensor repair.

New Doors for Youngstown Houses

On a Wick Park or Crandall Park house, a carriage-house style door keeps the look of the street; on a West Side ranch, a plain steel door with a window row is a clean update. Clopay, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors are what we install, insulated for attached garages, and we take the old door away (door installation).

Openers are LiftMaster and Chamberlain belt, chain and wall-mount models, many with battery backup for winter outages; opener installation has the details.

Campus Buildings, Rail Yards and Workshops

Youngstown State University, which serves about 11,000 students just north of downtown, is the city's largest employer, and several steel and metalworking operations still work within the city. Freight lines owned by CSX, Norfolk Southern and the Youngstown and Southeastern Railroad still run through the area. Loading docks, service bays and shop doors take heavy daily use, and we take on commercial door repair and service commercial door operators to keep them moving.

From John Young's Purchase to a Steel City

New York native John Young surveyed the area in 1796, and on February 9, 1797, he bought the whole township of 15,560 acres from the Western Reserve Land Company. The first European Americans to settle for good were James Hillman of Pittsburgh and his wife, Catherine Dougherty, and by 1798 several families lived near the spot where Mill Creek meets the Mahoning River. Youngstown was incorporated as a village in 1848, chartered as a city in 1867 and made county seat in 1876, when the county offices moved over from Canfield.

Coal set the pace at first. The Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal was completed in 1840, the railroad arrived in 1856, and the area's first blast furnace had been built back in 1803 by James and Daniel Heaton. Steel mills followed late in the century, and the census shows what they did to the town: 2,802 people in 1850, 44,885 in 1900 and 170,002 by 1930.

Each of those growth spurts left its own kind of house. Early neighborhoods close to downtown have narrow lots with detached garages at the back, many still on extension springs. Streets built from the 1930s through the 1950s have attached or tuck-under garages with heavier doors on torsion springs. We see both every week, and our vans carry springs, cables and rollers sized for either.

Mahoning Valley Winters

Youngstown has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, and it falls in USDA hardiness zone 6a. January averages 26.8 degrees, with lows at or below zero on 4.1 days and highs that stay at or below freezing on 43 days a year. Snowfall averages 67.8 inches a season, somewhat less than the snowbelt closer to Lake Erie, but the winter of 2010-11 brought 118.7 inches, and the all-time record low of 22 below zero was set on January 19, 1994.

On average the first freeze comes around October 14 and the last around May 6. For the months in between, a door's springs work hardest in the cold, its bottom seal can freeze to the slab, and an opener straining against ice can strip a gear. If your door stalls on a frozen morning, stop pressing the button and call us. A fall tune-up sets the spring tension and checks the auto-reverse before the first hard freeze.

Mill Creek Park, the Butler and the Symphony

Mill Creek Park, the oldest park district in Ohio, was established as a township park in 1891, and a memorial statue near its National Register plaque honors Volney Rogers, the Youngstown attorney who set aside the land for it. Its highlights include the restored 19th-century Lanterman's Mill, the rock formations of Bear's Den and the Fellows Riverside Gardens, whose lookout shows the woods above Lake Glacier on one side and downtown on the other. The "Cinderella" suspension bridge, built in 1895 to carry Valley Drive across Mill Creek, is the oldest of the park's six bridges. There are two 18-hole golf courses, the North Course on rolling ground and the South Course with narrow, tree-lined fairways, and the park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The Butler Institute of American Art, founded in 1919 by Joseph G. Butler Jr., was the first museum in the country dedicated to American art. The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra has been based in the city since 1926 and plays at Powers Auditorium, the area's primary music hall. Youngstown State University grew from a YMCA program that began offering college courses in 1908, and its Penguins are four-time national champions in FCS football.

Western Reserve Transit Authority buses run from a downtown terminal across the city and into Mahoning and Trumbull counties, and Interstate 680, the Madison Avenue Expressway and the Himrod Avenue Expressway form a freeway loop around downtown and the university.

Youngstown, Area by Area

The city splits into downtown and four large sides, each built in a different era, and the garages change with them.

Downtown and the University

Downtown keeps the original layout John Young designed, with government buildings, banks and venues such as the Covelli Centre, Powers Auditorium and the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre. The Arlington, Mahoning Commons, Riverbend, Smoky Hollow and University neighborhoods surround it. Here we work on apartment and shared garages as often as house doors.

The North Side

Brier Hill, Crandall Park, North Heights and Wick Park make up the North Side. Brier Hill was long known as the city's Little Italy, gave its name to Brier Hill-style pizza, and draws thousands to the Brier Hill Fest at the end of August. Crandall Park and Wick Park were home to the wealthiest families, and many executives' mansions still stand in the Crandall Park-Fifth Avenue Historic District, often with carriage houses and custom-sized openings.

The South Side

The densest and most populous division, the South Side grew in stages: Oak Hill, Erie, Warren and Lower Gibson were annexed by 1910; Fosterville, Newport, Lansingville, Buckeye Plat and Cottage Grove came in 1929, and Pleasant Grove and Brownlee Woods joined from Boardman Township the same year. Expect narrow lots, detached one-car garages and a lot of extension springs.

The East Side

The largest side by area takes in East High, Hazelton, Landsdowne, Lincoln Knolls, Scienceville and Sharon Line/McGuffey Heights. The blocks nearest downtown are among the oldest in the city, while much of the rest is open land annexed in the 1950s.

The West Side

Belle Vista, Cornersburg, Garden District, Kirkmere, Rocky Ridge and Schenley were built from the 1930s through the 1950s, moving south as the city grew, alongside the older Steelton and industrial Salt Springs neighborhoods. The West Side shares Mill Creek Park with the South Side and borders Austintown.

Youngstown Questions

Yes, all the time. Many still run on extension springs; we replace them in pairs and add safety cables so a broken spring can’t whip across the garage.

Usually. We measure the opening and order a door built to size, or adjust the framing when that is the better fix.

Yes. Downtown, all four sides of the city and the small piece in Trumbull County get the same service. We’re available 24/7, with same-day service on most calls, often within 1 hour.
