What We Do in Akron

Summit County's seat, Akron, grew up along the Little Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio. With 190,469 residents at the 2020 census it is the fifth-most populous city in Ohio. Those residents live in 82,970 households, and the city's 92,517 housing units are split almost evenly between owners (49.8% of occupied homes) and renters (50.2%).

That split shapes the work. A homeowner needs a snapped spring fixed so the car can get out; a landlord needs a tenant's door closed and locked again. Either way a technician can be on the road 24/7 to replace springs and cables, reset doors that jumped their tracks, repair openers or install new doors, from a single-car detached garage in Kenmore to a three-car door in Merriman Valley.

The Repairs Akron Calls Us For

  • Broken torsion springs on attached garages, and old extension springs on detached ones. We replace both kinds and add safety cables where they're missing; see spring repair.
  • Doors off track in tight alley garages where a bumper or mirror clips the edge. Off-track repair.
  • Frayed or snapped cables that leave a door hanging crooked; cable replacement.
  • Openers of every age, from decades-old Craftsman chain drives to new LiftMaster Wi-Fi units. Opener repair.
  • Rental properties with several doors that need a quick, documented repair for the owner.

New Doors for a Century of Houses

A Tudor in Fairlawn Heights calls for a carriage-house door with arched windows; a bungalow in Firestone Park looks right with a simple panel door; a 1970s multi-level in Merriman Woods can take a modern flush design. We install Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton doors, insulated when the garage is heated, and we can order sizes for older, non-standard openings. See garage door installation.

For openers, a LiftMaster or Chamberlain belt drive is quiet enough for a garage under a bedroom, and a Genie screw drive suits a detached garage. More at opener installation.

Polymer Valley, Hospitals and Rail Yards

Northeast Ohio's Polymer Valley is centered in Akron; in 2001 more than 400 companies in the region made polymer-based materials, 94 of them in the city itself. The Biomedical Corridor covers 1,240 acres between Akron General and Akron City hospitals, and freight still moves through the Akron Yard near Brittain Road on the east end. Plants, loading docks and service bays like these run on large sectional overhead doors. We handle commercial door repair and operators.

Worker Housing From the Rubber Boom

Simon Perkins and Paul Williams founded Akron in 1825 at the summit of the Ohio and Erie Canal, and the name comes from the Greek word for summit. The city's great growth came with rubber: the four big tire makers were headquartered here, and between 1910 and 1920 Akron was America's fastest-growing city, up 201.8%. The census counted 69,067 people in 1910 and 208,435 in 1920, and the population peaked at 290,351 in 1960.

To house their workers, the rubber companies built whole neighborhoods. Frank A. Seiberling built Goodyear Heights for his employees, and Harvey S. Firestone answered with Firestone Park. Houses from those boom decades are now around a century old. If yours has a garage at the back of a narrow lot, it may have an odd-sized opening, a sagging header or a door patched long ago. We measure carefully and check the framing before we hang anything new.

47 Inches of Snow and 40 Freezing Days

Akron has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons and lies in USDA hardiness zone 6b. January is the coldest month, averaging 27.9 degrees, and the temperature stays at or below freezing on about 40 days a year and drops to zero or lower on 3.3. Snowfall averages 47.2 inches a season, much less than the snowbelt closer to Lake Erie, while summers bring 90-degree days about 10.7 times a year.

That swing is hard on garage doors. Steel springs lose tension and snap in the cold, grease stiffens in rollers and hinges, and a door that expanded in July binds in January. A seasonal tune-up before each winter keeps the door balanced and the opener from straining.

Canal Parks, Museums and the Freeways

The Ohio and Erie Canal divides the city east from west, and the Towpath Trail along it draws more than 2 million visits a year. Lock 3 Park downtown hosts concerts and festivals and turns into an ice rink in winter. Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, a 70-acre National Historic Landmark, was Frank Seiberling's home and is the seventh-largest historic house in the country. The Akron Art Museum, the Akron Zoo and Derby Downs, where the All-American Soap Box Derby has raced since 1936, are all here, as is the University of Akron, with about 15,000 students.

Interstates 76 and 77 cross the city, Interstate 277 runs with US 224 on the south side, the Innerbelt (Route 59) serves the urban core, and Route 8 carries traffic north to the suburbs.

Akron, Area by Area

Akron's neighborhoods grew out of town mergers, annexations and the rubber era, so each has its own housing stock.

Highland Square and West Hill

Highland Square, whose commercial strip centers on a historic movie theater, is denser than most of Akron, with apartments along West Market Street. A statue at Portage Path and West Market marks the trail where Native Americans carried canoes between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. West Hill has stately older homes, including the Oakdale Historic District.

Merriman Valley and Fairlawn Heights

Merriman Heights homes date from 1911 on, many built by 1930, while Merriman Woods has multi-level homes from the mid to late 1970s. Fairlawn Heights, between Interstate 77 and West Market Street, is mostly Tudor Revival from the late 1920s and early '30s and again from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s.

Goodyear Heights and Ellet

Goodyear Heights was laid out with sweeping streets instead of a grid, and most of its houses went up between 1940 and 1980; it borders Tallmadge. Ellet, which asked to join Akron in 1929, lies at the far eastern edge next to Mogadore and Springfield Township, near Derby Downs and the Rubber Bowl.

Firestone Park and Kenmore

Firestone Park's curving, tree-lined boulevards wrap around a central park shaped like the old Firestone shield. Kenmore, named after Kenmore House in Virginia, grew fast between 1910 and 1920 along the trolley line to Barberton and was its own city before joining Akron; Interstate 277 and US 224 cut through it.

North Hill, Chapel Hill and Middlebury

North Hill was a melting pot where many Italian families settled, tied back to downtown by the All-American Bridge in 1981. Chapel Hill, bordering Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge, is one of the city's two big commercial districts. Middlebury, on the Little Cuyahoga just east of the university, was the first settlement in what is now Akron and has the city's highest share of pre-1940 houses.
