How to Program or Reset Your Garage Door Opener and Keypad

Step-by-step help for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman and Genie.

Mr. Pro, the Proactive Garage Door Repair mascot

Short answer: most garage door remotes and keypads are paired with the opener through a Learn (or Program) button on the motor unit on the ceiling. You press that button, then within about 30 seconds press the remote button or enter the keypad code, and the opener lights blink or click to confirm. Below are the general steps for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman and Genie, plus what to do when it does not work.

Have the manual? Follow it first. The model number is on a label on the motor unit, and the manufacturer's site has the manual for most models.

Before You Start: Safety First

  • Use a sturdy stepladder to reach the motor unit, and keep your hands away from the rail, the chain or belt and the moving trolley.
  • Keep the door in view while you test, and keep children, pets and cars out of its path.
  • If the door is crooked, off its track, or a spring or cable looks broken, stop. Do not run the opener. Call us instead.
  • Never tape or bypass the safety sensors near the floor to make the door close.

LiftMaster and Chamberlain

LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers are made by the same company and program the same way. The Learn button is on the back or the side of the motor unit, sometimes under the light lens, next to a small LED.

Program a remote

  1. Press and release the Learn button. The LED next to it lights up for about 30 seconds.
  2. Within those 30 seconds, press and hold the remote button you want to use.
  3. Release it when the opener lights blink or you hear two clicks.
  4. Press the button again to test.

Program an outdoor keypad

  1. Press and release the Learn button on the motor unit.
  2. Within 30 seconds, enter the 4-digit PIN you want on the keypad.
  3. Press and hold the Enter button until the opener lights blink or you hear two clicks.
  4. Enter your PIN and press Enter again to test.

On many newer models you can also start learn mode from the wall control.

Reset (erase) all remotes and keypads

Moved in, or lost a remote? Press and hold the Learn button for about 6 seconds, until the LED goes out. That erases every remote and keypad code from the opener. Then program the remotes and keypad you want to keep. The wired wall button keeps working.

To change a keypad PIN without erasing everything, most LiftMaster and Chamberlain keypads use a key combination printed under the keypad cover, usually starting with holding the * and # keys together.

Craftsman

Most Craftsman openers sold over the years were built by Chamberlain, so they use the same Learn button steps as above: press Learn, then press and hold the remote button (or enter the PIN and press Enter on a keypad) until the lights blink. If your Craftsman opener does not respond, see our Craftsman opener repair page.

Genie garage door opener on a garage ceiling

Genie

Genie openers use a Learn or Program button on the powerhead, often square, next to an indicator light. Steps vary by model, but the usual pattern is:

  1. Press and hold the Learn/Program button until the indicator light comes on, then release it.
  2. Press the remote button you want to use. On many models the light flashes, and you press the same button again.
  3. When the opener lights flash or the indicator goes out, the remote is paired. Test it.

Genie keypads work the same way: you set a PIN on the keypad, put the powerhead in learn mode, then enter the PIN and press the keypad's program or up button. On older Genie openers without a Learn button, the code is set with small switches, covered below. More on Genie garage door openers.

When Programming Does Not Work

  • Dead battery. A weak coin-cell battery is the most common reason a remote stops working or only works up close.
  • Lock mode is on. Many wall controls have a Lock or Vacation button that blocks every remote and keypad until you turn it off.
  • The remote does not match the opener. Remotes are made for a specific radio system, so a remote from another brand or era may not pair.
  • An old opener with switches. Openers made before the early 1990s often have no Learn button. The remote's small code switches must match the switches on the motor unit.
  • The opener itself is failing. If nothing works, or the opener hums without moving the door, the problem is inside the opener.

Our sensor and remote repair page covers the most common sensor and remote problems, and our garage door opener repair page covers the rest.

Excellent service and highly recommended! I called them initially for routine garage door maintenance, but during the inspection, they identified that the spring was broken. I had been experiencing issues in the past with the garage door not opening or closing properly, and they were able to identify the underlying problem quickly. They recommended replacing the spring with higher-quality rods and drums, and I’m very happy with the result. I could immediately feel the difference after the repair—the garage door feels much stronger, smoother, and more secure than before. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain what needed to be done and why. I really appreciate their honest recommendation and quality of work. Great experience from start to finish. I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing garage door repair or maintenance!

Opener and Keypad Programming Questions

A weak keypad battery is the most common cause, and on many keypads blinking keys are the first sign. Next, check the Lock or Vacation button on the wall control, then reprogram the keypad to the opener. If it still won’t work, the keypad or the opener’s receiver may be failing, and we can replace it.

On most models you reset a keypad by programming a new PIN to the opener with the Learn button, as shown above. To wipe everything, hold the Learn button until its light goes out, then reprogram the remotes and keypad you want to keep. Genie and older Craftsman keypads vary by model, so check the manual for your model number, or we can reset it on a visit.

Many wireless keypads use a 9-volt battery, and some use coin cells. The cover usually slides down or pops off to reach it. If the keys work only when you press hard, or only some of the time, start with a fresh battery.

Yes, on most openers. Putting the opener in learn mode with its Learn button lets you set a new PIN without the old one. If you just moved in, erase all old codes first so the previous owner’s remotes and keypad stop working.

Some keypads pause for a short time after several wrong codes to stop guessing. Wait a few minutes, then enter the right PIN slowly. If it still won’t respond, change the battery or reprogram it.

Yes. Marantec openers also pair remotes and keypads through a learn button on the motor unit, but the steps differ by model. Follow the manual for your model, or call us and we will program it on a visit.

On LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers, the color of the Learn button shows which radio system the opener uses, for example yellow, purple, red or orange, or green. A replacement remote has to support that system. Tell us the color when you call.

Usually, if the opener has a Learn button or code switches. Check the list of supported brands and Learn button colors on the package before you buy.

Many cars have built-in garage door buttons that work with most openers. You usually train the car button with your handheld remote first, then press the Learn button on the opener to finish. The steps for your car are in its owner’s manual.

Check the wall control first. If its Lock or Vacation feature is on, the opener ignores every remote and keypad until you turn it off. If the lock is off and the wall button still works, the opener’s radio receiver may be failing. Give us a call.

Often, yes. Older openers use small code switches inside the remote and on the motor unit, and a matching remote can be set to the same pattern. These older openers are less secure, so it may be time to ask about a new one.
