In April 2026, our team walked the show floor at the IDA Expo, one of the biggest trade shows for the garage door and gate industry. Manufacturers bring their newest doors, openers, parts and safety products there. We went to see what’s coming, ask questions and bring the best ideas back to our customers in Northeast Ohio.
Here’s what caught our eye, explained in plain words, and what it could mean for your home or business.
1. Modern looks for homes: wood-look finishes and long windows
The home doors that drew the biggest crowds had a clean, modern look. Three trends stood out:
- Wood-look steel and composite finishes. Rich, dark wood grain without the upkeep of real wood.
- Long, narrow horizontal windows. A row of slim windows on one side of the door lets in light and looks sharp on newer homes.
- Vertical grooves and flush panels. Smooth or ribbed panels instead of the classic raised-panel look.

These styles work well on many Northeast Ohio homes, from new builds to updated ranches. If you like the look, ask about an insulated version. Insulated doors help keep the garage warmer in winter and quieter all year. Our page on insulated garage doors explains the options, and you can try different styles on a photo of your own house with our garage door visualizer.
2. Safety lights for commercial doors
For businesses, the most useful thing we saw was simple: lights that show what the door is doing. One display used firehouse-style lights with an easy color code:
- Red: the door is closed.
- Flashing red: the door is moving.
- Green: the door is fully open.

Why does this matter? A truck or forklift that drives into a door that isn’t fully open can damage the door, the vehicle and the opener. A clear green light before you go cuts down on those costly hits. Another booth showed motion-activated LED strips on the bottom edge of the door, so people can see a moving door from across the room.

3. Smarter commercial door operators
We spent time at the Genie commercial booth looking at the GCL-H, a hoist operator built for high-lift and full-lift sectional and rolling doors. What we liked most were the plug-in modules that add features without changing the whole operator:
- Timer close: the door closes by itself after a delay you set, from 2 seconds to 5 minutes. It gives a warning before it closes and works with a monitored safety edge.
- Auxiliary output: extra contacts at the open, closed and mid-stop positions, an ADA relay output and a lamp output that turns on when the door moves.

For a business, a timer close means no more doors left open all night by mistake. The safety devices must always be installed and adjusted correctly, so this is a job for a trained technician. Learn more on our commercial garage door repair page.
4. Roll-up doors built to order
Several makers showed how commercial roll-up doors can be put together piece by piece: screen or heavy vinyl curtains, manual or motorized operation, different mounting styles, tracks and add-ons. Screen doors are popular for warehouses and shops that want fresh air without letting bugs in.

What this means for you
Trade shows help us stay current. We see new products up close, ask the makers hard questions and learn what’s worth your money and what isn’t. When you call us, we’ll tell you honestly which ideas fit your door and your budget.

Frequently asked questions
What is the IDA Expo?
It’s a yearly trade show for the door and gate industry. Manufacturers show new doors, openers, parts and safety products to dealers and installers.
What garage door styles are popular right now?
Modern looks are strong: wood-look finishes, flush or grooved panels and long horizontal windows. Classic carriage house and raised-panel doors are still very popular too.
Can I see a new door on my house before I buy it?
Yes. Upload a photo of your home to our garage door visualizer and try different styles and colors. We can also bring samples to your free estimate.
Can a commercial door close by itself?
Yes, with a timer close feature on a compatible operator. It must be paired with working safety devices, such as a monitored safety edge or photo eyes, and set up by a trained technician.
